Trump joins battle for the soul of the West — to a point

( CNN) President Donald Trump handed a battle cry to defend Western civilization on Thursday — but his government seeing for the coalition forces in the West is something that few of its other large chairmen would recognize, far less embrace.

“The fundamental question of our time is whether the West has the will to survive, ” Trump said in Warsaw, Poland, citing his legion nation’s long combats against tyranny as an example of the tenacity needed to preserve Western values.

On the surface, Trump’s speech was exactly the kind of sense Europe’s captains have pined to hear. He reaffirmed NATO’s Article 5 principle of reciprocal defense, albeit with a swipe at member countries over protection expend. He rapped Russia for “destabilizing activities in Ukraine and elsewhere.”
