Anthony Weiner sentenced to 21 months in prison in teen sexting case

Disgraced former Rep. Anthony Weiner was sentenced Monday to 21 months of imprisonment, facing the most severe penalty hitherto in the purposes of the sexting scandal that drove the New York Democrat out of Congress, ruined his matrimony and became a late topic in the 2016 presidential hasten.

U.S. District Judge Denise L. Cote problem the sentence in federal court in New York.

“This is a serious crime that deserves serious reward, ” Cote said in a statement.

Justice demand that this type of conduct be prosecuted and penalized with time in prison, ” Acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim said in a statement Monday. “Today, Anthony Weiner received a time decision that was appropriate for his crime.”

Weiner said last week that he was undergoing medication and is seriously sorry subjecting the adolescent to what his lawyers announce his “deep sickness.” Counsel said, nonetheless, that “hes having” promised in the past that he’s reformed.

Throughout the trouble, defense lawyers had shown the girl as an attacker, saying she wanted to generate cloth for a journal and maybe influence the presidential election.

“I have compulsively endeavoured scrutiny from women who contacted me on social media, and I employed with many of them in both sex and non-sexual exchange, ” Weiner said in a prepared affirmation in May. “These damaging compulsions generated immense devastation to my family and acquaintances, and destroyed my life’s dream of public service.”

Weiner defended to his now-estranged partner, longtime Clinton aide-de-camp Huma Abedin, and his family, after his admission of guilt.

“I have a sickness, but I do not have an apologize, ” Weiner said.

Abedin entered for divorce merely hours after Weiner pleaded guilty in May.

The FBI began investigating Weiner in September 2016 after a 15 -year-old girl in North Carolina told a tabloid story place that she and the former politician had exchanged lewd letters for several months, and accusing it of inviting her to undress on camera.

This relationship was barely the first that motived public shame for Weiner and members of their families. In 2011, Weiner resigned from Congress after an wayward tweet uncovered his sexting wonts. He later loped for New York City mayor, but was unsuccessful.

But the criminal investigation into his relationship with the minor infamously intersected with the 2016 presidential election, when negotiators acquired Weiner’s electronic manoeuvres and uncovered a brand-new quantity of emails between Hillary Clinton and Abedin.
