Every year, on the 3rd Friday of September, the small village of Binissalem, Mallorca slams down to have dinner in wall street. People from all over the island gather in this small town–best known for its staggering wine–to alcohol and be merry.
The event is known locally as’ Sopar a la fresca’ and city council estimates that virtually 20,000 parties participate in the communal meal–a huge turnout considering the town itself only has a population of nearly 8,000 people. The annual dinner is part of a greater occurrence that happens every September, a huge wine-coloured festival “ve called the”‘ Festa des Vermar’.
According to neighbourhood inhabitant and reddit customer hermanodesconocido, everyone contributes. People accompanied their own tables and chairs and you make arrangements for menu with your neighbours. Some cook, others help set up while others embellish. It’s a communal phenomenon and people help out where they can. Apparently it’s also a tradition to eat pates with lamb on this day.
