( CNN) Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens is encountering bombshell allegations regarding sex misconduct and extortion — salacious blames that have forced a rising Republican star to acknowledge that he had had an extramarital thing, but too vehemently deny that he had resorted to extort.
A formal investigation into the allegations is being launched, Kimberly M. Gardner, circuit advocate for the town of St. Louis, announced Thursday.
“The Governor is very confident he will be cleared in such investigations, ” Greitens’ lawyer, James Bennett, said. “This is a three-year-old personal topic that presents no matters of public or legitimate interest. The knowledge will prove that fully. As we learned today, these specious accusations are being advanced by political adversaries.”
